Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our walks, training, and approach
How do I get started with The Canine Mindset?
The first step is to get in touch — either through the contact form on the website or via WhatsApp. Tell me about your dog, what challenges you're facing, and what your goals are. From there, I'll recommend the best starting point for you, which is usually our Neutral Walks.
Do I need any experience or training before joining?
Not at all. Our walks and sessions are designed for owners at every stage — whether you've never done any structured training or you've tried everything and nothing has worked. All I ask is that you come with an open mind.
What breeds do you work with?
All breeds, all sizes, all backgrounds. I have a lifetime of experience with all types of dogs including small and large breeds — and our community includes every type of dog. There's no breed restriction.
My dog is aggressive/reactive — can you still help?
Absolutely. This is exactly why The Canine Mindset exists. Reactive, nervous, over-friendly, or dogs with behavioural issues — you've found your tribe. We start gently with Neutral Walks where there's no pressure on your dog to interact, and we build from there at your dog's pace.
Is there a waiting list?
It depends on current capacity. Get in touch and I'll let you know when the next available walk or session is. I keep group sizes small to ensure every dog and owner gets the attention they need.
Can I bring more than one dog?
Our walks operate on a one dog per human policy. This ensures every handler can give their dog the full attention and control they need, which is essential for safety and progress — especially with reactive or nervous dogs.
What is a Neutral Walk?
A Neutral Walk is a structured, on-lead group walk where dogs learn to exist calmly around other dogs without the pressure to interact. There are no greetings, no nose-to-nose meetings — just calm, parallel walking. It's the foundation of everything we do and the first step in building your dog's confidence.
How much do Neutral Walks cost?
Neutral Walks are £5 per walk, per dog.
How often do Neutral Walks run?
Approximately twice per month. All dates, times, locations, and updates are shared via a private WhatsApp group that you'll be invited to when you join.
Where do the walks take place?
We walk across Dorset and the New Forest. Locations vary and are shared in our private WhatsApp group ahead of each walk. We use a range of beautiful, carefully chosen locations that suit the needs of the group.
What should I expect on my first Neutral Walk?
On your first walk, I'll meet you beforehand to chat about your dog and give you a brief overview of how the walk works. You'll walk alongside the group, keeping a comfortable distance from other dogs. There's no pressure — we go at your dog's pace. Most owners tell me they notice a difference in their dog's demeanour by the end of the very first walk.
What if my dog reacts during a Neutral Walk?
That's completely normal and expected — it's why you're here. I'll guide you through how to manage the situation calmly. Every dog in our group has been through similar challenges, so there's absolutely no judgement. We work through it together.
What is Social Fundamentals?
Social Fundamentals is a small-group training session designed to help you and your dog develop practical social skills for everyday life. We focus on essential behaviours such as checking in, giving space, and calm approaches. These sessions blend structured walking with practical exercises to boost your dog's confidence and self-control.
How much does Social Fundamentals cost?
£35 per session. Each session lasts approximately 1.5 hours.
How is Social Fundamentals different from traditional obedience classes?
This isn't about drilling commands or teaching tricks. Social Fundamentals focuses on real-world skills — reading your dog's body language, building a genuine partnership, and developing the confidence and self-control your dog needs for everyday situations. It's practical, hands-on, and tailored to dogs who need more than a standard class can offer.
Do I need to have done Neutral Walks first?
Social Fundamentals is ideal for dogs progressing from Neutral Walks, but it's also suitable for dogs that didn't pass their assessment or those who need to build foundational skills. Get in touch and we can discuss the best route for your dog.
How many dogs are in a group?
Groups are kept deliberately small to ensure every dog and owner gets individual attention and support.
Is there a WhatsApp group for Social Fundamentals?
Yes. You'll join a supportive WhatsApp group where I share session goals, updates, and guidance between sessions. It's a great way to stay connected and ask questions between sessions.
What is the assessment?
The assessment is a 1:1 evaluation where I observe your dog's behaviour, body language, and how they respond to other dogs in a controlled setting. It's the gateway to our off-lead Social Walks and helps me understand where your dog is in their journey.
How much does the assessment cost and how long does it take?
The assessment costs £20 and takes approximately 60 minutes.
What happens if my dog doesn't pass the assessment?
There's no failure — just a different next step. If your dog isn't quite ready for off-lead Social Walks, I'll recommend either Social Fundamentals group training (£35) or 1:1 Training Sessions (£75) to work on the specific areas that need development. Many dogs just need a little more time and support.
Do I need to have attended Neutral Walks before booking an assessment?
Yes. The assessment is designed for dogs who have built a foundation through our Neutral Walks. It's the next natural step in the progression.
What is a Social Walk?
Social Walks are off-lead pack walks for dogs that have passed their assessment. This is where dogs get to practise positive social skills in a safe, managed environment — interacting freely with other dogs who have also earned their place in the group.
How much do Social Walks cost?
£18 per dog, per walk.
Can I join Social Walks without doing Neutral Walks and an assessment first?
No. Social Walks are by invitation only, for dogs that have completed Neutral Walks and passed their assessment. This process ensures every dog in the group is ready for off-lead interaction, which keeps everyone safe.
Are the dogs off-lead the whole time?
The walks are designed for off-lead interaction, but this is managed carefully. I assess the environment and the group dynamics, and there are moments where dogs may be put back on-lead as needed. Safety always comes first.
How do I find out about upcoming Social Walk dates?
All dates, times, locations, and updates are shared via a private WhatsApp group that you'll be invited to once you've passed your assessment and joined our Social Walks.
What does a 1:1 training session involve?
Each session is a private, in-person meeting focused entirely on you and your dog. I take a holistic approach — looking at diet, exercise, sleep, breed-specific needs, and your daily routine alongside the specific behavioural challenges you're facing. It's not about quick fixes; it's about understanding the root cause and building lasting change.
How much do 1:1 sessions cost and what's included?
1:1 Training Sessions cost £75 for a 1-hour session. Every session includes a detailed training report covering what we worked on, your dog's progress, and specific exercises to practise at home.
Where do the 1:1 sessions take place?
Sessions take place at a suitable outdoor location — usually in the Dorset or New Forest area. We'll arrange the location based on what's most appropriate for your dog and the goals of the session.
Do I need to be at a particular stage to book a 1:1 session?
No. 1:1 Training is available at any stage of your journey — whether you're just starting out, working through specific challenges, or preparing for off-lead freedom. These sessions are designed to complement our group walks or work as a standalone option.
What is your training philosophy?
I take a holistic approach to dog training. Before we work on behaviour, I want to understand the full picture — diet, exercise, sleep, breed-specific needs, and your dog's daily routine. I believe that behavioural issues are often symptoms of something deeper, and real change only comes when we address the root cause, not just the surface.
Is this like traditional obedience training?
No. This isn't about drilling commands or creating robots on leads. My goal is to encourage a healthy, positive, and happy interaction between you and your dog — a genuine partnership built on mutual understanding. I want your dog to choose to work with you because they want to, not because they're bribed.
Why is the owner-dog relationship so important?
The bond between owner and dog is everything. When that relationship is strong — built on trust, communication, and understanding — everything else follows. A dog that feels safe and understood is a dog that can learn, grow, and thrive. That's why I work with both ends of the lead.
What does "muzzle-positive" mean?
We are a muzzle-positive community. A muzzle isn't a badge of shame — it's a tool for freedom. It prevents bites, but more importantly, it allows you to relax. And when you relax, your dog relaxes. If your dog needs a muzzle, you'll find no judgement here — only understanding and support.
Where are you based?
I'm based in Bournemouth, Dorset. Our walks and sessions take place across Dorset and the New Forest.
How do I find out about upcoming walk dates and locations?
All walk dates, times, locations, and updates are shared via a private WhatsApp group. You'll be invited to the relevant group when you join our walks.
What's your cancellation policy?
Please let me know as soon as possible if you can't make a walk or session. I understand that life happens, and I'll always try to be flexible. For 1:1 sessions, I ask for at least 24 hours' notice.
What should I bring to a Social Walk?
Bring your dog on a secure lead and bring a muzzle, water for your dog, poo bags, treats (if you use them), a long line, and weather-appropriate clothing and a drink for yourself.
What should I bring to a Neutral Walk?
Bring your dog on a secure lead, water for your dog, poo bags, treats (if you use them), and weather-appropriate clothing and a drink for yourself. If your dog wears a muzzle or has reactivity, bring a muzzle too.
Do you offer sessions in bad weather?
Dogs don't mind the rain, and neither do I! Walks and sessions go ahead in most weather conditions. If conditions are genuinely unsafe (e.g. severe storms or icy paths), I'll notify everyone via the WhatsApp group.
